I'm A Big Kid Now

Guess who is peeing in the potty?
Thanks to Brandy the Baby Whisperer, 2 days before his 3rd birthday, Jackson is wearing big boy underwear during the day.
YAY!

I'm Not Interested

Potty Training - The Three Day Method: Day 3

At exactly 12:00pm on this, the third day of Potty Training, I put a diaper back on my 2 year old. Why? He wasn't ready. No...ready isn't quite the right word...he wasn't INTERESTED.

When I saw him stirring this morning, I went in just as I had yesterday and picked him up to transport him to the potty. Only he had already pooped. So I decided to use this as a learning experience and after we sat on the potty, I empty the contents of his pullup into the potty and said "poo-poo goes in the potty". He seemed to get that and wanted to flush. We went downstairs sat on the potty again and worked a puzzle. Nothing. We had and uneventful breakfast. While I was cleaning up, Jackson peed on the floor. This time it wasn't even an "ought oh" and run. He looked at it and then carried on about his business. I asked him if he could help me clean up the pee and he happily did. We went outside. He played a bit and then asked if he could wear his underpants. Good sign, I thought. In hindsight, I think he just wanted to go down the slide without his butt being burnt (haha).

He peed twice outside with no second thought or acknowledgement.

After about an hour we went back inside to put Samuel down for a nap. I decided that if he peed again in his underwear I was just going to let it go until he told me he was wet and wanted to be changed. I thought maybe the uncomfortable feeling would motivate him. Boy was I wrong! Next time he peed, Jackson and I cleaned up the puddle together, but I made no move to change his underpants. It was only when he wanted to sit on my lap A HALF HOUR LATER (and I said no way...you have on wet underpants) that he wanted them changed. So I made him take off the wet ones and put the dry ones on. He had an accident two more times. It was a struggle to get him to sit on the potty even to try. And he thought cleaning it up was great fun. That's when I realized: he simply isn't interested in this. He isn't interested in the stickers or the skittles or the underwear or the potty. He doesn't care. You can lead a baby to the bathroom, but you can't make them pee. And I made the decision to put a diaper back on him with the promise to try again in a month's time.

At first I felt really down about it. I felt like a failure. I felt like I had let Jackson be a failure. But then I looked at Jackson and he wasn't down at all! He was playing and laughing and being a wonderful little 2 year old. The diaper, the underwear, being naked...it was all the same to him. His personality is very laid back. And getting this potty thing down wasn't urgent for him.

As I thought about it, I realized I had learned something very important about my own child. He is INCREDIBLY smart and INCREDIBLY fun to be around. I blocked off three days in my schedule. Completely. I even did the laundry in advance so I wouldn't have any housework with which to contend. I blocked off three days SOLELY to spend with Jackson. And despite all of the mess, I had a great time playing with him. He may of not been interested in the potty, but look at all the things he IS interested in.

He knows the words to tons of songs...Pop Goes the Weasel, Summertime, Twinkle Twinkle, the theme song to Thomas and Cars, Old McDonald... a few among many.

He can name all of the letters (at random) and several words that begin with that letter.

He knows his shapes...circle, square, triangle, oval, heart, star...and colors. And uses more than one descriptive work to identify something.

He LOVES puzzles, and is very good at them.

He loves to draw. Here he was practicing his circle up top and told me the bottom was a choochoo train.

I think he loves books more than any toy he owns. He loves to go through and point out the different letters. He knows what the word "snap" looks like.

He loves cars and trains and soccer. He loves to dance and sing (and can do so in tune).

He is very polite, super sweet, and loves giving kisses and hugs to those he cares about.

And he loves his little brother.

A FaceBook friend wrote to me at the beginning of all this..."don't worry...he won't go to college in Depends". And she is right. Jackson will get there. In his time. Not mine. His mind is busy learning other things. Like how to spell his name and the difference between a front end loader and a bulldozer.

I have been very honest in writing these blogs for several reasons:
1. I want to be able to look back and read it just as it happened.
2. I have many friends who are parents of children going through the same things I am. It helps to know you are not alone.
3. Being a parent is the most rewarding and beautiful thing in the world. It is also FULL of challenges. I will not get it right all the time. You will not get it right all the time. Mistakes will be made, and flexibility and adaptability become necessary. I am human. My children are human. But my love for them is beyond explanation. Beyond comprehension. Beyond perfection. Beyond the limits of our Earthly binds. And more present and lasting than any failure.

So bye-bye potty. See you again in a month!

Relax

Potty Training - The Three Day Method: Day 2

I had my doubts this morning. I actually told my mom, "He's not ready. I'm putting a diaper on him." And she said "Summer....is he not ready? Or are YOU not ready?" Leave it to Mom to pose the hard questions. In all honesty, I think it is probably me that isn't ready. Or at least mostly me. I don't want my child to fail. And how can he fail if he doesn't try something? And how will he ever be a wellrounded individual if he is never allowed to fail. Toilet Training 1 - Summer 0. So we braved the day. And I am SO glad I did. Jackson didn't fail. He got better.

At Jackson's first stirrings this morning, I picked him up and sat him on the pot. We read books, but I wasn't expecting much as he had already gone in his pullup. So I put his underpants on him and was heading downstairs when...pee. Ok. So I changed his underpants. 5 minutes later. Pee. This happened 2 more times. This is when I wanted to give up but my mom wouldn't let me. It is like a damn trigger those underpants. So I got the potty, got a small table, and we worked puzzles, watched Elmo Potty Time and ate breakfast. All from the potty.

Ingenious, right? Wrong. Nothing in the potty. He stands up. I put underwear on him. And pee.

Alright. New strategy. Naked from the waist down (him not me), we head outside. I figure he has never SEEN himself pee or poop before so maybe he can get to know his body a little better in a place where I don't have to worry about him making a mess. So I put the little potty outside, show Jackson where it is (just in case), and send him on his merry way to play to his heart's content cute little hiney showing and all.

All is well until his hand gets shut in the toy box. He runs over for a hug and when I pick him up he pees on me. Except he doesn't notice. He is too upset. And it wasn't an exorbitant amount. I am thinking...maybe he pees a little when he is in distress. Maybe he peed so much yesterday because I was stressing him out with all this potty stuff. Wheels are churning in my head...

Meanwhile, hand mended, Jackson requests a snack. Cheese. I go in to get it. When I walk back out he is sitting on the potty grunting! I get so excited! GOOD JOB JACKSON! *Snap a picture* (Gross, Mom)

But I think I scared the poop back in because Jackson gets up and runs away with no pee or poop being left behind.

After 2 hours and 1 small success in the potty outside and no accidents, we come inside and go upstairs (the cleaning people are here). All I can think about is that Jackson still has yet to poop. So I am watching him with my eagle eyes. We sit on the potty. Nothing happens. He runs around naked (loving every minute). And then we have a picnic lunch on the floor. Then he runs to a corner and I can tell he is getting ready to poop. Instead of saying "go potty" in my calm voice, I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and whisk him off to the potty. I've scared the poop back in again and Jackson defiantly gets up, screams, runs over to my bed, and pees next to it. Jackson happily helps me clean up the mess; we sit on the potty, read a couple of books, and don the pullup for naptime.

Intermission. Must regroup. Must redeem myself for the epic fail on which I ended the first Act. Toilet Training 2 - Summer 0. I decide that I am too uptight and worried about this. He knows where the potty is, what he is supposed to do...heck, he would've done it this morning had I not interrupted him. I am just going to show him where the potty is and leave him to his own devices. If he pees or poops, I'll say "go potty" and he can help clean it up. But I am over worrying about it. I'll put towels down over the floor when we come inside and hopefully he'll feel more comfortable. Most of all I NEED TO RELAX! He is picking up on my stress.

Naptime stats:
1 success
5 accidents
not keeping track of tries since we are naked and I am not using a timer

Fast forward. Naptime is over. I pick him up out of bed (pull up is dry...he stays dry for the most part during every nap), put him on the potty, and we read books for about 5-7 minutes. Nothing in the potty. We head outside for a snack and juice. As soon as he gets out there he starts to pee. He looks down, says "ought oh" and runs and sits on his potty and finishes his pee in there! I am jumping up and down! Success! (Well partial). I give him a skittle - his 2nd today. We play outside for a while and he has one more small success.

Then we head inside. By this time, he had had two big cups of water and hardly peed at all. I knew it was going to come out eventually. Within an hour, he had a small success on the potty followed by a big mess on the floor followed by a big success in the potty (all of it in the potty and a lot of it) followed by a big mess on the floor followed by another big success in the potty. I was so proud of his first big success that I gave him one of his bigger rewards - a matchbox car. Jackson was so happy! I was so happy! Toilet Training 2 - Summer 1.

We make it through dinner and the last hour of the evening without any accidents. I put him in the bath, put a pull up on him and let him play while I was putting Samuel to bed. I fully expected him to pee in his pullup during this time, but when we went to sit on the potty before bed I found he was still dry. Still no poop though...maybe a poo-poo success tomorrow?

Today's Stats:
6 successes
9 accidents

What I learned today: RELAX. (Toilet training is still winning, but the game isn't over.)
And I am very proud of Jackson. I would say it was 50% better today. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Tinkle Tinkle Little Star (HUH?)

Potty Training - The Three Day Method: Day 1

Wow. That was the roughest day we have had together since the Crying It Out stage. Everyone said it would be messy and rough, but I didn't expect THIS!

We started out the day saying goodbye to diapers as we "threw them away". Jackson was so excited to put on his new Lightning McQueen underwear!

Then we went to the potty for the first time. I guess Jackson thought this sounded great in theory, but when we actually sat on the potty...that's when the tears began. The first try was a no go. That's ok...a sticker on the Good Try side of the chart. Then he wanted to sit on the potty again...in theory. Tears. Big Tantrum. Another sticker on the Good Try side. Then the accidents started. Only they never ended. They started coming about every 15 minutes. Easy (so I thought). I'll set the timer for 15 minutes instead of my original 1 hour. Jackson was happy to hear the potty song alarm every 15 minutes (Pants On The Ground...haha), but couldn't ever seem to go pee-pee in the potty. Instead, he would pee right after.

But here is the odd part. It wasn't a big puddle. It was always just a little bit, and he would always say "ought oh". I am pretty sure he knew he wasn't supposed to pee on the floor or in his underwear so he would stop the pee. However, he couldn't get it to come out on the potty either.

I have never been so happy to see naptime. I decided to do pullups during naptime and bedtime. The morning was so stressful that I needed that time to regroup.

The naptime stats were: 10 tries, 7 accidents, 4 tantrums, and 0 successes.

Near the end of naptime, I went to get Jackson out of bed while he was still half asleep to put him on the potty in hopes that he would go. And he did! His first success! We celebrated with a Skittle and a sticker on the "I DID IT" side of the chart.

I decided to let him run around bare bottomed hoping that would inspire him to go in the potty. Next thing I know he had pooped on the floor. And I guess he didn't realize he didn't have on a diaper or underwear and he stepped in it before I could get to him to pick him up. So now there is smooshed up poop in the carpet. Blech. I clean Jackson and start to clean the floor (1 TBSP liquid dishwashing soap, 1 TBSP white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water...gets poop stains out of your carpet by the way) when he pees on the floor. So we go sit on the potty. He cries. Chalk one up to the try side. As I go back to continue cleaning the poop and pee off the floor, he pees again (a little pee...never big puddles). By the time I get that all cleaned up, he has peed again. It was like by the time I had one mess clean, he would make another one. It was like every 5 minutes. At this point I had to excuse myself to go into another room to cry, call a friend and regroup. All I wanted to do was put a diaper on him.

(Poor little Samuel through all of this...he had to entertain himself most of the day).

Fast forward an hour...I did a load of laundry (ran out of underwear...put those things on him as fast as I could after the whole poop on the floor incident). I pulled the little potty into the family room. And I made up a song about how pee-pee and poo-poo goes in the potty. At this point, Jackson would pee a little, say "ought oh" and run to the potty. He could never get his pee to come out IN the potty...and started saying "owie". So I am guessing his little bladder was so full that it hurt, but he couldn't get it to come out in the potty and he knew he wasn't supposed to pee on the floor or in his underwear. This carried on through dinner. He did end up having two very small successes (I was happy to celebrate anything positive). He was so excited when I asked him "Do you see any pee pee in the potty?" and there was pee in there. His smile was so big and he gave me the biggest hug and screamed "I did it!" To see your child succeed is a great feeling.

By the time bathtime came around and I put him in the bath, he peed like there was no tomorrow in the tub. Poor little guy! We put on a pullup, played a little, sat on the potty before bed, and both of the little guys are now asleep. I am trying to come up with a game plan for tomorrow. Maybe we'll be outside all day. With the little potty. But no timer. That didn't work for us.

End of the day stats:
3 Successes
12 *Official* Tries
19 Accidents

Here's what I think went right today: He has learned the beginning sensation of pee. He knows where to go when it happens and he goes to his potty when the pee starts to come out. And he helps me clean the pee up off the floor.

I am hoping tomorrow brings an easier toilet time for Jackson and a renewed sense of patience and positivity for me. Off to bed. I'm exhausted.

Big Boy

Because I am backdating posts, here is an update on my little man, Jackson. I didn't realize how big he was getting until Samuel was born. Now he seems so grown up!

Here is Jackson the day Samuel was born.

When Jackson and my mom came to pick Samuel and me up from the hospital, Jackson had on a Santa hat. I felt like Jackson Claus had come to take me home.

Jackson made a gingerbread house at daycare before the Christmas break. I was so proud of him! Miss Brandy said he would put on a candy, then eat one, put one on, then eat one... that's Nana's grandson!

Jackson has proven to be quite the little musician. He loves to sit at the piano and play - not banging with a full hand like toddlers usually do, but one finger at a time.

He also sings and dances constantly. He will dance to anything. And by anything, I literally mean an-y-thing. Of course, it makes my heart glad that he likes music and the arts!

Despite the devastating losses the Colts have endured this season, we still love them. Have you seen a cuter Colts fan?

Since Dada has been gone, Jackson misses him and he loves talking to Dada on Skype (me, too)! Jackson found this old picture of us and carried it around all morning!

Jackson loves his trains. It's the first thing he plays with in the morning and the last thing at night. He uses the shopping cart he got for Christmas to tote all his trains and cars around.

Jackson loves to read. He reads to himself, to other people, and loves being read to. See how he reads this book and imitates the pictures?

Exciting news: we are in the beginning stages of potty training! I can't wait to only have to worry about changing one diapered bottom. We got him a new Elmo potty and potty book. He practices sitting on his new potty, but only fully clothed. He does go in to the bathroom on occasion to potty in his diaper... at least he knows that that room is where that is suppose to happen! Progress...

For a while, Jackson's eating habits had become somewhat picky. At one point, he would only eat grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, pizza, french fries, occasionally chicken, string cheese, waffles, and yogurt. Fortunately, he has been expanding his tastes and will now eat a wider variety of foods including Almond Butter, Mandarin Oranges, Dave's Mom's Chicken, Toasted Ham and Turkey Sandwiches and pretty much anything else as long as he can dip it in Ketchup or Cheese Sauce. On the day on which the following pictures was taken, I made Jackson grilled cheese, pretzels, and mandarin oranges for lunch. He ate the oranges first, then the pretzels, then asked for more oranges. He proceeded to eat half the tin of mandarin oranges and say "all done". He didn't touch one piece of the grilled cheese. Be still my heart...

Jackson has also taken up the activity of running. Fast. Everywhere. And it's even better if he can push something while he's running.

Jackson's vocabulary has just blossomed. To the already extensive list, he's added:
In
Out
Off
On
Yogurt
Bo Bo Balls (Donut Balls)
Oel (Noel)
Please
Thank you
Baby
Sam/Samuel
Abby (you know...Elmo's friend)

Yummy
Snow
Let's Go
Brush Teeth
All Done

Hi Sweet Pea
It's okay
Go Colts!
Gross
Wow (most commonly said when we turn on his constellation night light)
Sing

And I am sure there are some that I've forgotten.

He can sing his ABC's up to "lmnop" and count to two.

But you have to be careful what you say around him because he will repeat it. He is a little parrot!

Some of my favorite Jackson stories from the past couple of weeks:
I went to pick him up from daycare last week and Brandy had on AOL radio tuned to the kid's channel. It was the Chipmunks singing "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas and all of the kids were dancing including Jackson. They were having so much fun!
You'll notice in the word list that Jackson says "Hi Sweet Pea". I call him Sweet Pea and he has started calling me Sweet Pea as well. It is adorable.
And in the mornings when we go in his room to wake him up, he greets us with an enthusiastic "hi"!
Jackson has an Old MacDonald farmer with his new farm set. He refers to Old MacDonald as "EIEIO".

Luckily, the sickness seems to have left our household for the time being (knocking on wood as we speak). David started giving him Vitamin C and Immunity Boosting Vitamins while he was here which I've kept up in his absence, and I haven't so much as wiped his nose since before Christmas. YAY!!

Jackson is such a good big brother. He throws away dirty diapers and helps me burp Samuel. He hasn't had any real moments of jealousy and remains a good natured, easy child. He is growing up before my eyes and in just a few short months, he'll be two.

I love you Sweet Pea!

Almost 21 months old
