Who Could Ask For Anything More

It's Friday morning. Jackson is at daycare. Samuel is sitting next to me sleeping. My house is being cleaned (thanks, Groupon). I still have an hour and 10 minutes before I need to leave for work. I am soaking in this peacefulness. Because most of the time, life is CRAZY!

Jackson is quite the active little toddler. He no longer walks...he runs. I can't believe how quickly he is growing up! I ask him what he wants to eat and he tells me! He says "thank you" when appropriate! He follows instructions and makes his toys have conversations!
He can sing the ABCs (minus a few letters at the end)!
**there is no picture to this video...only sound...I had to trick Jackson as he wouldn't sing it on camera (is he really my son??)

My dad bought Jackson a Thomas and Friends electric train set. When Jackson woke up yesterday, he found the unopened box. I told him he could open it after he ate breakfast. You should have seen how quickly he ate (for a normally extremely slow eater)! We put the train set together and he played with it all day.
Jackson LOVES Thomas. He can sing the theme song. I am pretty sure we will have a Thomas themed second birthday party.

Jackson also LOVES his juice. And just this past week he has graduated to a (semi) big boy cup! He rebelled for the straw cup...until he got thirsty. And then he relented and learned to drink from the new cup. Now when he drinks from it, he says "big boy". Yes, sweet pea, you're a big boy!

This week, Jackson had to come to rehearsal with me (and Samuel). I packed his Diego backpack with a coloring book, crayons, a book, some trains and cars and a snack, and off we went. He was so well behaved! He played by himself when everyone was busy. But when the high-schoolers weren't needed on stage they would come and play with him. He had a great time with them, and I have several new babysitters :)

We are still working on potty training. There is no big rush so we are taking it as it comes. Jackson can identify what he's done after he's done it, but doesn't recognize the urge to go enough to voice it. And he knows what the potty is, where it is, and for what it is used. When I have to go, he typically comes with me. We go through the process of explaining what is happening and he always says "bye bye" when we flush (HAHA).

I am also very happy with how he is doing at daycare. He loves to go, loves his friends, and loves Miss Brandy. And he learns SO much! He has a best buddy there called Dillon and a girlfriend called Natalie. Apparently, the girls really like Jackson - I was told he just sits there and they bring him toys and kiss his cheeks and make sure he eats lunch and pretty much treat him like a king! Love it! He's a cheeky one!

I keep telling my mother that this is my favorite age. And she says "so far". Subtle words of wisdom from my mother.

I have officially packed away all of the newborn clothes. It was kind of sad! Did it really go by that quickly? I guess anything would seem quicker than Jackson's transition out of newborn clothes (at 6 months!!)... I am thankful we had friends who passed on their baby boy clothes...all of Jackson's 0-3 month clothes were for the summer...nothing suitable for this cold weather!

Samuel continues to be a great baby. He hasn't slept through the night since I last reported, but he does sleep consistently in 4-5 hour stretches. I can't complain. And I enjoy the quiet at night with him. He is becoming more aware with every passing day. I love his expressions!

Such a happy baby!

Samuel is getting more used to Jackson, too. And Jackson is becoming a little less rough with his brother. I love seeing them interact. Samuel just watches Jackson, and of course, Jackson wants to kiss and hug his brother at every opportunity. (Which isn't always a good thing...like when Jackson brings a cold home from daycare...and now Samuel has a cold...hmmmm).

As for me, I am doing great. I am working and doing everything I did in the fall. It gets easier as the routine becomes more established. I treasure Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings when I get to stay at home with my boys and play. I feel great. Most of the time I feel rested (there are those occasional nights when one or both boys are off). And I am happy. Genuinely happy.
As for my weight loss, over the past 2 weeks I have lost another 2.2 lbs. That brings my total since Jan 1 to 9.8 lbs gone. I have 10.2 lb left of Samuel weight and 10 lb left of Jackson weight. I feel optimistic about it. I am eating way healthier than I have in a long time. I am more aware of what I am putting in my mouth. One challenge for our group was to eat 5 serves of vegetables and fruit a day. I was able to complete it, and am still eating 4-5 serves a day now. The current challenge is drinking 64 oz of water a day (that's 8 8 oz glasses). So far I'm good. I have my 32 oz mug that I got while in hospital with Samuel and I fill that up twice a day. Most days I am done by 2:00pm. And I am still thirsty! I must be very dehydrated. Drinking that much water also curbs my appetite so I am not wanting to snack as much. The first day I drank 64 oz of water, myfitnesspal (the iPhone app I am using to track my caloric intake and exercise) told me that I had not consumed enough calories to maintain a healthy level of nutrition (which isn't good because I need an extra 500 calories a day above what I normally would need just to make breastmilk). I was surprised! So now I am consciously trying to add a couple of healthy snacks in the afternoon so I don't screw up this great thing Samuel and I have going on. I've also thrown in a bit of exercise as well...mainly elliptical machine work and abdominal crunches.
So here I am, 6 weeks post partum and 32 lbs lighter (since giving birth).

Other interesting happenings with my post partum body...
I have started leaking. I didn't have that with Jackson so I wasn't expecting it at all. Well, one morning at church as I was up in front of the congregation leading the music doing my job I feel wet on my right side...all over...my side, my arm... yeh... good thing I was wearing black or it would have REALLY been noticeable.
Also now getting the post partum hair loss, but even more disconcerting is the chemical change in my scalp. My hair was SO greasy. But it was only greasy in the center near the roots. It was disgusting. I changed shampoos three times and nothing cleared it up. I washed it and it still looked dirty. Gross. I finally went to my lovely hair dresser and she mixed baking soda in with the shampoo. Took it right out! So now I mix baking soda in with my shampoo every morning. Clever Katie! Katie also said (for anyone else out there who might be experiencing this...lots of my friends are having babies) that if you didn't have baking soda to use Dawn dish soap first, then use your regular shampoo. No conditioner.

I just feel really lucky. Really grateful. Really thankful. I have to pinch myself sometimes...I am a mother. A MOTHER! My husband and I put our genes together and made two little boys who are amazing! I am responsible for the well being mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually of two tiny human beings. Yes, at times it is overwhelming and I wish I could have some more "me" time. But that will come later. I wouldn't trade this time for anything in the world. To watch a newborn discover a whole new world and a toddler develop a new skill every day... Could there be anything better in the world than being a mother?

Growin' Up

Happy 21 Months to my Sweet Pea! I can't believe how quickly you are growing up!

Jackson got another big boy haircut from our favorite hair dresser, Miss Katie.

Jackson can now distinguish between red and blue...referring to them half of the time as "Elmo" and "Thomas". Ha! He repeats a lot of what we say (he is VERY observant). And his vocabulary grows by a good 10 words every day. It has grown so much, I have trouble putting everything in to a list anymore. And when I think I have a complete list, he says something new. Most anything he wants to communicate, he can now.

His play has become more sophisticated, too. He loves to play trains and cars and will dance to just about everything. Miss Brandy says at daycare he is right in the middle of it all running around with the other kids and wrestling with them. In fact, the past couple of times I have gone to pick him up, he doesn't want to leave!

He still loves his brother (still called "baby") more than ever. Though he is finally learning to be gentle with him and not smoother him when he wants to give hugs.

He is really the sweetest little guy. He is helpful, well behaved, and is generous with his affections to those with whom is familiar. He does not demand constant attention, but enjoys it when his favorite people play with him.

I feel truly lucky to have two wonderful, sweet children. I couldn't be more in love...

Cradle Song

News Alert!
At the age of 5 weeks, Samuel slept through the night! On Tuesday, he went to sleep...by himself with the mobile on...at 10:30 and slept until 4:15. Then went back to sleep until 7:30! Last night, he went to sleep...by himself with the mobile on...at 11:00 and slept until...wait for it...6:30! And then went back to sleep until 9:18! Wow! I kept waking up wondering if he was ok...so my sleep wasn't as great as it should have been. But I'll take it! And I hope this isn't a fluke! Let's go for a good one tonight, too, little man! The amazing part is that Jackson slept until 9:18, too. I heard Samuel crying and Jackson singing at the same time. Are they sharing a brain?

We are just taking it easy today. It started snowing this morning and hasn't stopped yet. No school again, so Myles is here. The boys played cars this morning and had cinnamon rolls.

Samuel just chillin' on the Snow Day.

In other Samuel news, he got his first bath on Monday night. He LOVED it! He just laid there...and when I went to move him up, he would scootch himself back down and pootch out his belly and cheeks. He is a little Bath Buddha!

He is in the baby acne stage. Jackson had baby acne around 5 weeks, too, but it only lasted a couple of weeks. Can't wait till it goes away...I feel so bad for his red cheeks!

But he is still a cutie!

Smile

1 Month Old! Can you believe it? That month flew by!

Little Samuel has hit some milestones!

On the day he turned 4 weeks old, he started to smile! Intentionally. His gummy smile lights up his whole face. I dare anyone to try not to smile back in return.

And finally, on his one month birthday, Samuel's umbilical cord fell off! Wow! That held on for a long time! And some of it is still in his belly button...buried deep in there.

Samuel is a good little baby. He still sleeps nice stretches at night; the longest at 4.5 hours. Breastfeeding is going well - he is a great eater! He has attended all of my work commitments with me, either resting in the sling or sleeping in his carrier, without any hassles. On Wednesday, I start back to USI and I am anxious to see how he reacts to that choir as in utero, he would always get very still when they sang.

I think Samuel is getting a little more used to Jackson. These are typical Jackson/Samuel interractions:

He is becoming so much more aware of things. He can focus better now - and his eyes cross as a result. I love his big blue eyes! And when he smiles at you, it is magic!

What a great first month!

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

I thought I'd take a quick break from my beautiful children and blog about myself for a second or two. My family is doing a weight loss challenge. It started New Year's Day. Some are doing Weight Watchers, some are counting calories, some are exercising like there is no tomorrow. I am counting calories with an iPhone app called MyFitnessPal. In 9 days when I get the go ahead to start some exercise, I will start on the elliptical. Since giving birth I have lost 30 lbs! I am back in my pre-Samuel jeans! I still have 22 lbs more to lose before I hit my pre-Jackson weight, and that is my goal by June 25 (my sister's wedding date). For the weight loss challenge, we all had to specify an 8 week goal for a reward at the end. If one person doesn't make goal, NO ONE gets the reward. My goal was 10 lbs. We are 2 weeks in and I have lost 7.6 lbs. But more than simply numbers, I feel great. I am drinking tons of water, and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I'd like to post my progress on this blog as I feel it will keep me on track. I refuse to be the weakest link! So accountability...it's a strong motivator. Here is my "belly pic" from today.

Not bad, eh, for just having given birth 4.5 weeks ago?

Snow (Hey Oh)

It's snowing! School is closed! And Myles, Jackson and I headed outside to enjoy the white powdery stuff! This was Jackson's first time in the snow, and he loved it. He is such a nature lover. When he woke up in the morning, he looked out the window and said "Wooooow....snow!". So I headed to Target to pick up a cheap pair of snow bibs. The only pair they had in Jackson's size was in purple, but I figured he wouldn't mind. At least not until he was old enough to know I had put him in purple...

We had a snowball fight and made snow angels. We thoroughly enjoyed our Winter Wonderland!

Brothers

My two precious little boys. What can I say? I am the luckiest Mother on the planet.

Jackson is such a good big brother. He loves Samuel (to whom he refers as "baby"... he can say "Samuel" or "Sam", but prefers "baby"). He might love Samuel a little too much... he wants to hug him and kiss him constantly and loves to lay his big head on...well...baby. Most of the time, Samuel cries when he senses Jackson is near. But Jackson tries to calm him with an "it's okay".

The day I brought Samuel home from the hospital, Jackson and Samuel just studied each other.

Just as it was for me, I think it was love at first sight for Jackson, too. Samuel on the other hand prefers to study his brother from a distance.

Jackson tries to share his trains and toys with Samuel. One night while I was cooking dinner, I looked over to find Jackson with Samuel's pacifier in his mouth (I gave Samuel a new one), and Jackson was "reading" his Thomas book to Samuel. My heart melted on the spot.

I love my new double stroller (thank you, sweetie)! It is so handy to get both boys around easily.

I love playing with my little men. We all dressed up in our Colts gear to cheer on our favorite team (too bad they lost)!

They are so alike yet so different. They have the same temperament; they are both sweet; they look alike...sometimes; but they have totally different personalities. I love seeing the bond that only two brothers can share flourish with each day that passes. I love being a Mother of Two! I can only think of one saying at the moment: my cup overfloweth.

Big Boy

Because I am backdating posts, here is an update on my little man, Jackson. I didn't realize how big he was getting until Samuel was born. Now he seems so grown up!

Here is Jackson the day Samuel was born.

When Jackson and my mom came to pick Samuel and me up from the hospital, Jackson had on a Santa hat. I felt like Jackson Claus had come to take me home.

Jackson made a gingerbread house at daycare before the Christmas break. I was so proud of him! Miss Brandy said he would put on a candy, then eat one, put one on, then eat one... that's Nana's grandson!

Jackson has proven to be quite the little musician. He loves to sit at the piano and play - not banging with a full hand like toddlers usually do, but one finger at a time.

He also sings and dances constantly. He will dance to anything. And by anything, I literally mean an-y-thing. Of course, it makes my heart glad that he likes music and the arts!

Despite the devastating losses the Colts have endured this season, we still love them. Have you seen a cuter Colts fan?

Since Dada has been gone, Jackson misses him and he loves talking to Dada on Skype (me, too)! Jackson found this old picture of us and carried it around all morning!

Jackson loves his trains. It's the first thing he plays with in the morning and the last thing at night. He uses the shopping cart he got for Christmas to tote all his trains and cars around.

Jackson loves to read. He reads to himself, to other people, and loves being read to. See how he reads this book and imitates the pictures?

Exciting news: we are in the beginning stages of potty training! I can't wait to only have to worry about changing one diapered bottom. We got him a new Elmo potty and potty book. He practices sitting on his new potty, but only fully clothed. He does go in to the bathroom on occasion to potty in his diaper... at least he knows that that room is where that is suppose to happen! Progress...

For a while, Jackson's eating habits had become somewhat picky. At one point, he would only eat grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, pizza, french fries, occasionally chicken, string cheese, waffles, and yogurt. Fortunately, he has been expanding his tastes and will now eat a wider variety of foods including Almond Butter, Mandarin Oranges, Dave's Mom's Chicken, Toasted Ham and Turkey Sandwiches and pretty much anything else as long as he can dip it in Ketchup or Cheese Sauce. On the day on which the following pictures was taken, I made Jackson grilled cheese, pretzels, and mandarin oranges for lunch. He ate the oranges first, then the pretzels, then asked for more oranges. He proceeded to eat half the tin of mandarin oranges and say "all done". He didn't touch one piece of the grilled cheese. Be still my heart...

Jackson has also taken up the activity of running. Fast. Everywhere. And it's even better if he can push something while he's running.

Jackson's vocabulary has just blossomed. To the already extensive list, he's added:
In
Out
Off
On
Yogurt
Bo Bo Balls (Donut Balls)
Oel (Noel)
Please
Thank you
Baby
Sam/Samuel
Abby (you know...Elmo's friend)

Sing

And I am sure there are some that I've forgotten.

He can sing his ABC's up to "lmnop" and count to two.

But you have to be careful what you say around him because he will repeat it. He is a little parrot!

Some of my favorite Jackson stories from the past couple of weeks:
I went to pick him up from daycare last week and Brandy had on AOL radio tuned to the kid's channel. It was the Chipmunks singing "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas and all of the kids were dancing including Jackson. They were having so much fun!
You'll notice in the word list that Jackson says "Hi Sweet Pea". I call him Sweet Pea and he has started calling me Sweet Pea as well. It is adorable.
And in the mornings when we go in his room to wake him up, he greets us with an enthusiastic "hi"!
Jackson has an Old MacDonald farmer with his new farm set. He refers to Old MacDonald as "EIEIO".

Luckily, the sickness seems to have left our household for the time being (knocking on wood as we speak). David started giving him Vitamin C and Immunity Boosting Vitamins while he was here which I've kept up in his absence, and I haven't so much as wiped his nose since before Christmas. YAY!!

Jackson is such a good big brother. He throws away dirty diapers and helps me burp Samuel. He hasn't had any real moments of jealousy and remains a good natured, easy child. He is growing up before my eyes and in just a few short months, he'll be two.

I love you Sweet Pea!

Almost 21 months old
